Hello! I am Sharif, and I would like to share with you how AI has become my go-to helper in college life here at MSU. All of this happened when I first used ChatGPT. Just for fun, I asked it to write up a play starring my friends, and I couldn’t stop laughing at how spot-on it was. At that point, I realized AI could do so much more than function like a unique search engine.
My interest in AI deepened after taking CMSE classes at MSU, where I dove into machine learning and neural networks. It had been pretty cool to see how these ideas work in real life.
Then, while working at the Center of Teaching and Learning Innovations (CTLI), I met MJ. Her interest in AI and our conversation led me to an exciting opportunity this summer to work on AI Commons with Sarah, Teagan, and MJ. It will be fascinating to see the creative ways teachers are incorporating AI into their classrooms, and how it’s changing the way we think about learning and teaching.
Now, let me tell you how AI has become like a personal helper for me. Do you remember when going through econ graphs used to be super confusing? Now I take a picture, show it to an AI tool, and it explains it in a way that really makes some sense. It’s kind of like having a genius study buddy with you all the time.
AI has been a game-changer for me in my programming classes. If I get stuck on some tricky code, I will ask AI to explain it step by step. It’s sort of like having a patient coding tutor available 24/7. Sometimes when I am not sure how to start a coding project, AI will help me break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks.
AI has also helped me in everyday things. Recently, I wanted to get back in shape to improve my performance in cricket. Instead of going through numerous workout videos, I asked AI to generate a workout plan for me. It thought about what I wanted to achieve, when I was able to exercise, and what equipment I had. Now I’m actually sticking to my workouts!
The more I use AI, the more I believe it’s going to be part of everything that we do. I feel like we’re going to see elements of AI in almost every task in the future. Every day, it becomes amazingly powerful, and as such, exciting to think about how it is going to change our lives within the next few years.
But AI isn’t perfect. Sometimes it gets things wrong or gives info that doesn’t quite fit. That’s when I need to think by myself. I’ve learned to use AI to get ideas, but not to rely on it completely.
I’m so excited about AI Commons and can’t wait to read how teachers are using AI. I’m hoping they are going to guide us on how to use AI ethically while still following course policies. I am interested in seeing how they bring AI into their teaching and if they are excited about these changes, or if they find it challenging.
Their stories will be super helpful for students like me who want to make a difference by using AI the right way. I’m looking forward to seeing how different teachers in various subjects are adapting to AI. It’ll be interesting to see if they’re slowly incorporating AI or if some are hesitant about using it.
What’s your experience with AI? Join us on AI Commons to share your story. Whether you have a tech background or are approaching any of the AI concepts for the first time, your ideas can really help someone else out. Let’s figure out this AI stuff together and learn how to use it responsibly in our studies!
